Mikhail’s Journey: The Power of Community Support

Seven-year-old Mikhail Ohanyan from Shushi faced not just the trauma of war, but also a difficult medical condition from birth. Mikhail was born with a jaw abnormality that affected both his breathing and speech. When the 2020 Artsakh war forced his family to flee their hometown for Stepanakert, his medical needs had to take a backseat to survival.

Despite his challenges, Mikhail remained a vibrant child who loved playing the dhol (traditional Armenian drum), singing, drawing, and sports. But as he grew, his condition worsened, threatening to limit these activities he loved so much.

The medical team proposed a two-phase treatment plan:

  1. Implementation of specialized functional devices to promote proper jaw growth
  2. Follow-up treatment with braces

That’s when his teacher stepped in, guiding them to our organization for help. Thanks to the generosity of numerous donors, we were able to provide the necessary support for his treatment.

Just one month into his treatment, Mikhail’s mother Arevik shares the wonderful progress:
“We discovered his breathing problems when he was 6 years old, but after being displaced from Artsakh and living in rental housing, we couldn’t afford the treatment as his condition continued to worsen. Thanks to all donors  who made it possible to obtain this device in such a short time.

My Mikhail has been wearing the device for a month now, and we can already see results! He will need to continue wearing it for two more years, with monthly check-ups, followed by braces treatment. I am incredibly grateful to everyone. It brings me joy to know there are still such kind people in the world.”

Mikhail’s treatment journey will continue for approximately two more years, followed by braces. But already, the positive changes are visible. This success story wouldn’t have been possible without the compassion and generosity of our donors who believed in giving Mikhail a chance at a healthier future.

Your contributions have not just funded a medical device – they’ve given a young boy the ability to breathe easier, speak clearer, and continue pursuing his passions in music, art, and sports. Thank you to the IMAST app with whom we collaborate, and to all who helped write this chapter in Mikhail’s story.
