Mariana: A Story of Overcoming Challenges and Unlocking New Opportunities

Mariana is a bright and determined 10-year-old girl who was born with achondroplasia, a rare genetic condition that affects bone growth. This condition has brought numerous challenges into her life, but her spirit and resilience remain unshaken. From the time Mariana’s condition was diagnosed, her journey has been anything but easy. Her mother, Anna, learned about Mariana’s diagnosis during pregnancy and faced societal pressures to give up her child. Refusing to do so, Anna chose to fight for Mariana, providing her with care, love, and an unwavering belief in her potential.

Achondroplasia has significantly impacted Mariana’s mobility and independence. As a child, she struggled to perform everyday tasks like brushing her hair, dressing herself, and playing with peers. Despite these challenges, Mariana has remained full of hope.
Her mother’s dream was for Mariana to undergo limb-lengthening surgeries using the Ilizarov apparatus, a costly and complex medical intervention. Unfortunately, Anna did not have the financial means to make this dream a reality.

In 2022, the “Hurry for Good” foundation stepped in, along with the invaluable support of donors and partners. This partnership enabled Mariana to undergo her first surgery in Saint Petersburg, Russia, to lengthen her lower legs by 8 cm. In 2023, a second surgery added another 8 cm to her upper arms. Thanks to these interventions, Mariana not only gained height but also improved her ability to move and care for herself. Her newfound independence and growing confidence have been life-changing.

In 2024, Mariana required a third surgery to further lengthen her legs by 9 cm. This critical procedure was made possible through a successful fundraising collaboration between the “Hurry for Good” foundation and the IMAST app, whose joint efforts rallied generous donors to cover the expenses. The surgery was conducted in October 2024, and Mariana is currently undergoing a challenging yet hopeful recovery. By the end of this process, Mariana will have gained a total of 17 cm in height, a transformation that will empower her to live with greater independence and confidence.

Mariana’s mother, Anna, expressed profound gratitude:
“I am deeply thankful to everyone who supported us during this journey—every donor, the ‘Hurry for Good’ foundation, the IMAST app, and the incredible people like Elena Hakobyan and Zara Sukiassian who guided us. Your kindness and generosity have changed our lives. May God bless you and your families.”

Mariana’s journey is far from over. The next steps involve removing the medical devices and continuing rehabilitation therapies. These interventions will ensure that Mariana can live her life independently, pursue her dreams, and contribute meaningfully to society.
Thank you to everyone who stood by Mariana’s side and became a part of her incredible journey. Together, we’ve made a world of difference in her life.
